Message from the President

Dear HKICC Friends,

I have almost completed reading the book “What got you here, won’t get you there”, authored by the eminent executive coach Marshall Goldsmith.

Marshall shares many interesting aspects in this book but one observation left a deep impression on me:

“As you go through life, contemplating the mechanics of success and wondering why some people are successful and others are not, you’ll find that this is one of the defining traits of habitual winners: They stack the deck in their favor. And they’re usually unabashed about it.”

It made me think: how often do I stack the deck in my favor, or rather, when do I stack it against my favor? Some of the areas in my life to consider include

  • Who are the clients I work with?
  • Who are my business partners?
  • What deals do I accept?
  • What initiatives do I take?
  • Who are my friends?

Do I program success or failure through the choices I make? It reminds me of the need to be more selective in order to achieve higher levels of success.

Another great business book, “Good to Great” by Jim Collins, contains the so-called ‘Hedgehog Concept’ which means that companies that made the transition from ‘good’ to ‘great’ managed to optimize the 3 circles

  1. “What are you passionate about?”
  2. “What can you be the best in the world at?”
  3. “What is your one financial denominator that has the greatest impact on your success?”

By defining the area of overlap of these 3 circles and then rigorously focusing on that area, these companies achieved outstanding success. They stacked the deck in their favor by avoiding any other, non-related activities.

What is your Hedgehog Concept? Do you stack the deck in your favor? A professional coach may be able to assist you in creating awareness where you stack your deck against your favor and how to achieve positive change.

Let’s keep progressing!
