Dear HKICC Friends,

As a life coach, one of the first things I try and ascertain when working with my clients is "Are they being true to themselves?" In other words, are they being authentic?

First of all, let me explain what that means, and why it's important. I'm going to use myself as an example.

As a woman of Asian culture, I was brought up to be somewhat submissive, and as a youngster, was rewarded for being so. Not necessarily just by my parents, but also by the society and culture I was socialized in. The reward came in the form of acceptance and approval. In cultures such as my native culture, there tends to be a level of disapproval towards women who are overly assertive, aggressive, or high achievers. That is because the primary role of a woman is to be a supportive wife and mother ...
