Message from the President
Dear HKICC Friends,
Is the current financial and economic crisis just a 'normal' downturn as experienced periodically over the past decades or is it special in any way?
One thing is for sure, the extent of corporate losses (c.f. examples such as AIG, Royal Bank of Scotland to name a few) has reached astronomic dimensions and so did financial bailouts of numerous governments.
The question is: are we experiencing a massive destruction necessary to make place for a new beginning? What does this new beginning look like? And why might it be particularly relevant for us coaches?

| The Top Ten Steps to Get Becoming Irresistibly Attractive |
 |
By Thomas J. Leonard
Adapted by Carole Lewis for HKICC from: http://topten.org/public/BK/BK2.html
The term Irresistibly Attractive refers to the idea of great people, ideas, opportunities, things and more, come TO you vs you chasing them or being promotive, seductive or acquisitive in nature.
1. Don't need much.
If you need something, usually it will run away/escape you. Get your personal and financial needs met first and you'll find yourself attracting vs seducing.
2. Think big, really big.
Attraction occurs when there is a healthy vacuum between where you are and what you want to have happen. The wider the gap, the greater the pulling power of attraction.

| The Power of Opposites |
 |
By Tony Dovale
Adapted by Carole Lewis for HKICC from:
http://www.lifemasters.co.za/Life-masters-discover-the-power-of-opposites.htm
Why is it that, whenever we men finally subdue our egos adequately enough to take on a coach, we typically want a male coach? And the same seems to go for women leaders too. Why do they so often go for a female coach when a male coach could offer a whole lot more? Is it for camaraderie and like minded support? Is it because this is where we believe we'll feel safer, less vulnerable, more supported and more compatible? Or is it just because we don't understand the power intrinsic in embracing opposites and diversity?
This moment of deciding to take on a coach offers incredible opportunity for learning, growing and discovering even more¡K if you are prepared to cross the gender barrier, and engage the power of opposites.

| Women Coaching Women |

By Anne Litwin and Mary Lou Michael
Adapted by Carole Lewis for HKICC from:
http://www.annelitwin.com/publications/womencoaching.html
In a world of high demands for performance and constant culture change, coaching is an increasingly common staple of organizational life.
Our particular interest in the role of coaching in the lives of women leaders grows out of 25 years each of professional experience where we have acted mostly as providers, but also as recipients of coaching.
We initially conceived of this article as a reflection on our own experiences. As we developed a few core questions, Anne came across a framework to help us look at our experience and Mary Lou came up with the idea of interviewing other women coaches. We invite you to read what we have learned.

| Communication or Conversation? |
 |
|
By Dr Hilary Armstrong, PhD
When we call someone a "communication expert" we assume this means that they exhibit great conversation and relationship skills. This is not always so.
The field of communication expertise is broad and undefined. Commonly people understand communication as getting a message across. If this is the case, then communication stands for a myriad of different practices in organisations, including networking, external and internal communication strategies, marketing the brand, emailing, and communication training. Communication therefore is seen as primarily a one way activity that is framed by efficiency, task orientation and outcome achievement. For example, when people design a communication strategy, it is about "managing the message", when they are taught communication it is likely to be about "closing the sale", presentation skills are about "how to influence people" (without causing "death by power-point"). All of this activity actually leads to a reduction of interpersonal skills in favour of techniques like active listening (being seen to nod wisely with the mind elsewhere), or talking with clarity (say it short and to the point so that 'dot-point' conversations become the accepted norm) or using email wisely (saying it how it is - but not saying it face to face).

LEADERSHIP COACHING FOR MANAGERS: The World is Ready!
"Why Leadership Coaching is the pathway many Fortune 1000 companies are adopting as the leadership style of choice."
|
By Marilyn Atkinson, PhD |
Adapted by Carole Lewis for HKICC from:
http://www.annelitwin.com/publications/womencoaching.html
Leadership coaching is now the management model of choice in nearly half of all Fortune 1000 Corporations in North America, that number is growing each year as advanced models of systemic managerial coaching take hold.
Today's executives are faced with mounting leadership issues as they attempt to navigate their way through unprecedented global change. The issues they face are multiple, yet unique to the 21st Century: the generational shift of an aging workforce, shareholder demands, increased corporate accountability and the demographics of personnel with a whole new set of attitudes, values and beliefs. Together, these create a difficult blend of push-pulls, which leaders must negotiate through on a daily basis. It is this soup of complex expectations that keep many executives up nights, and keep team meetings tense. Today, more than ever, executives require a personal coach.

Book Review
by Kay Ross
"The Brain That Changes Itself - Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science" by Norman Doidge, M.D. (Penguin Books, 2007)
If you're interested in human behaviour and psychology (and what coach isn't?!), this book is sure to fascinate you as much as it did me.
The author, a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst and researcher, reports on the latest research breakthroughs in many branches of neuroscience, and tells inspiring stories of patients who have benefited from that research. Most importantly, he offers hope to patients with brain damage, and people suffering from emotional or psychiatric problems, by busting the myth that the structure and functioning of the brain and its parts are fixed, hard-wired and immutable.

What led you into coaching?
I have been in the field of training and development for 17 years. I always said that I loved training. Till the day somebody said to me, "all training is useless". That statement made me realise two things - training is the start of a journey and it is the entire journey that excites me. The journey of change¡K I love change! I see change as something exciting; something to look forward to. I know that for a lot of people change is a time of uncertainty and it engenders a fear, panic and nervousness. I believe that for an individual to complete the change journey and not get off mid-way, ongoing support is necessary and what better support mechanism is there than coaching.
Tell us something unique about your coaching style.
Each individual is unique and my strength is in being appreciative of that uniqueness and not questioning it. I have also been told often that I am approachable and it is easy to build rapport with me. I also have a lot of experience working with multiple cultures and I use this experience to the benefit of my coachees.

Dear Readers,
February is the month when our hearts and minds turn to love. What does love mean to you? For me, love is about hugs, smiles, laughter, friendship, nature, beauty, a family meal. It is active, it is in the heart, it is about putting myself first. How much do you love yourself? How much do you choose what will support you?
Most of my clients claim to be loving. When we examine how loving they are many learn that they are more loving towards others than themselves. And sometimes they become aware that they behave less than loving than they claim in that they blame, complain, they believe the world against them, they fail to ask for support, people-please and are not all kind to themselves in their self-talk.
When we learn to love ourselves, be proud to be ourselves, the gift is inner joy - a knowingness that everything is and will work out for the best.
This month I invite you to ask yourself what would you do differently if you loved yourself more, how could that change your ability to risk and grow as an individual, how could that allow you to be more of you? Let's have some more love in our lives!
