Message from the President
Dear HKICC Friends,
Both in the West as well as in Asia, the beginning of a year is often used to launch a new beginning in certain aspects of our life.
We tend to reflect back on the past year and think about how the New Year could be different and how we can make it the best year yet.

Message from Danny Moorjani
Happy New Year to all of our members and subscribers. During the course of 2009, your Executive Committee will be introducing additional benefits and services to your membership.
One of these is a brand new online forum for the exchange of ideas, sharing professional tools, a place to brainstorm or, just a place to hang out and ask questions. The forum can be reached by clicking here and is open to anyone with an interest in coaching or coaching related issues. Registration is simple and takes about 3-4 minutes to complete.
At present, there are seven broad discussion areas covering; the development of HKICC, life coaching, corporate coaching, parental & youth coaching, nutritional & health coaching and, coaching as a business. The final section is an area where HKICC members can showcase any of their coaching related seminars or products.
I look forward to seeing you on the forums. If you've got any questions or suggestions about the forum, you can either PM me or send me an eMail at forum.admin@coachinghk.org
Warm regards
Danny Moorjani

Will 2009 Be an Awesome Year? 10 Tips To Get Ready
by Joeann Fossland
Adapted by Carole Lewis for HKICC from:

"Reduce your workload by 30% and increase your fun load by 30% and you will increase your revenues by 100%. More fun, less struggle -- more results on all fronts."
-- Abraham-Hicks
That sounds good to me. How about you?
Here are 10 areas to include when you do your planning for 2009.
1. Get to know yourself
Actually, I have a confession to make. I have been accused of being a control freak. I was surprised when some friends and family members all agreed to this. It's not how I see myself at all. Do you ever have that happen-someone shares how they see you and it isn't at all your own self-perception? It's good to check in by asking others what they see as your strengths (this is much more fun and ultimately more helpful than asking for the negatives!).

| In 2009 Everyone Will Need a Coach |

Coaches, may I have your attention? Just over the horizon, 2009 is waiting. It's a scary, complex, confusing and yes, exciting time to be alive.
In reality, most every one of us in the world has been dumped out of our comfort zone. There are many questions: If who we think we are is tied to what we DO, and what we DO disappears, will we disappear also? If who we think we are is tied to what we HAVE, and we can't HAVE so much anymore, will we not BE as much as we were?
Never has it been more important to understand that we are human beings - not human doings - not human havings. BE-ings.

Coaching through recession: When the going gets tough.
Stephanie Sparrow15 September 2008 10:00 This article first appeared in Training and Coaching Today.
Adapted by Carole Lewis for HKICC from:
http://www.personneltoday.com/articles/2008/09/15/47355/coaching-through-recession-when-the-going-gets-tough.html
With the West facing the first recession since the early 1990s, coaching spend will come under scrutiny. Can it still prosper or will it be seen as a disposable luxury item?
One of the many depressing cliches about business survival in any economic downturn is that 'training is the first to go'.
The jury is still out as to whether this will apply to coaching - the new-ish kid on the block - but there is an argument that demand for coaching may increase rather than decline.
"It would be bad news for the nation and managers if coaching were to be cut back," says Professor Stephen Palmer, director of the centre for coaching.

This month's questions:
Q I currently accept payment from HK clients by way of on-line banking transfer. I am looking to grow my business and open up to overseas clients, as well as offering workshops in addition to one-on-one coaching sessions. My website designer says I need to create a payment gateway. What is that ..how is that done...and where does Paypal come into it?
A If you plan to accept payments regularly and want to make it easy for your clients to pay you, your website designer is quite right. A payment gateway is the best option. It allows your clients and yourself a convenient way to send and receive payments.
In simple terms, a payment gateway is a secure financial channel between you and your client. Your bank for example is a payment gateway. You give the client your bank account details for them to make a deposit, the bank handles the transaction and you then receive the money in your account.
This is great for transaction where both parties are in the same country and use the same bank. By logging into your bank account online, you are immediately able to verify the funds have been transferred.
However, if both parties are using different banks, it may take a few days before you receive the funds. Worse still is if you are both in different countries where in addition to the time delays you may face handling charges and exchange rate issues.
A simple solution is to create a place on your website where you would have a "Buy Now" or "Pay Here" button. This would connect to a payment gateway so you can immediately start accepting payments by credit cards (your web designer will help you to add this). Nowadays, most people are very comfortable paying by credit card because of the security it offers. If the goods or services turn out to be faulty in some way, the buyer can lodge a complaint with the credit card company and the chance of getting your money back is greatly increased.
PayPal is an example of an online payment gateway. With PayPal, you are able to combine a number of features into one solution. Your clients gain the flexibility of paying you either by credit card or, if they have a PayPal account, money can be transferred from there. You can choose to bill in any major currency and receive the payment in a currency of your choice - within minutes, not days!
Opening an account is a quick, simple procedure and even in it's simplest form, PayPal would create all of the buttons that you would need.
Q My website designer suggests that I install traffic tracking software on my site. What are the pros and cons? Do I need it?
A Traffic tracking can be as simple as a visitor counter, a question box on your site asking "How did you hear about us?" or, as complex as covertly probing the visitors computer to see what software they are using and what town they are connecting from.
I'd like to answer your questions in reverse order. First, do you need it? If you are using your site for commercial purposes and you need to measure and quantify the "value" of your site, I believe that the answer would be - Yes, you do. Obviously the type and scale of your business will greatly influence the level of sophistication you would require.
For a coaching practice, your requirements would be fairly straight forward and can be accomplished with little or no additional financial investment.
Your designer can quickly install a visitor counter onto your site. If there is a lot of traffic to your site, it would be an advantage to have this counter viewable to visitors.
Alternatively, check with your website hosting provider. Most hosting providers have a set of basic analysis tools that are included with your subscription that give you a very clear picture as to traffic to your website. Additionally, Google has a free simple tracking page for you to use online which shows what most traffic tracking software can't - who and what is linking to your site. |

How long have you been involved with HKICC?
Nearly 2 years.
How would you like to see HKICC develop in the year to come?
I would like to see more initiatives that promote coaching in the region. The profession of coaching is still not recognized as it is in the West, and Hong Kong ought to be the coaching capital of Asia. I would like for the HKICC to organize with the help of sponsors a conference on coaching, with guest speakers from all coaching fields and all 4 corners of the world. Not only is there a need for awareness, but there is also a need for greater credibility to the profession of coaching.

For Book Lovers
This month the editor recommends:
A New Earth
by Eckhart Tolle
Start the New Year by awakening to your life's purpose through reading "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle. This is an excellent book to dig deeper on who you are in your essence, how to put your ego/fear aside, and learn how you have the power to make a difference. What I learned from this book is that my only purpose in life is to BE me, that's the only thing that is unique to me - anything else is a bonus! |
