Lily Ting

Human Resources Trainer and Facilitator

What led you into coaching?
I have always been interested in learning, and I have a natural gift to convey trust with people with whom I work. As a French-Chinese, this gift is connected to my up-bringing and personal experience.

In the corporate world, my skill sets allow me to connect with people from different backgrounds, to understand who they are so they can leverage from their strengths and accept their weaknesses.

As organisations get bigger, communication becomes more difficult. Using my ability to clarify roles and intricate situations, I have facilitated communications and understanding between people, easing tense situations.

I am fascinated by the differences between the East and the West; my unique position as French Chinese allows me to voice and clarify the concern of people from both sides. I realized that essentially I was serving as a mediator between the management team and the other staff and I was facilitating issues linked to cultural differences.

The positive feedback I received from my clients in previous activities prompted me to dedicate myself full time to consulting, training and coaching.

Who do you typically coach?
I work for both foreign business owners and Chinese people operating with western culture companies.

Typically I have worked for Western companies who want to breakthrough in China. I have helped them improve cooperation between Chinese and western staff who want to go beyond the cultural gap. Just as any local company, they need to motivate and retain their talents.

Another important aspect of my work is to help Chinese staff to understand how to work with westerners, and what are their expectations.

How does coaching in Hong Kong compare with other places where you’ve coached?
The energy of Hong Kong is very dynamic. It is driven by results. People want to see changes and improvements within a short time.

Typically I support western managers to have a better understanding of what Chinese staff think. I help them to clarify Chinese staff expectations. I also help Chinese staff to understand how the western mindset works.

Chinese people want tangible and measurable results, whereas Westerners, especially French people, need to understand the concepts and the ideas before they engage in a process.

What is your favourite coaching tool/technique?
Coaching is not an exact science, each client is unique and requires a specific approach.
I make sure my answers provide results. I have to see which one of my coaching strategies will most efficiently bring about these results.
I have a non-judgmental approach to analyse clients’ particular situations which allows them to feel validated. This enables me to enhance communication and clarity issues between managers and employees at the mental and emotional level.

What makes you a great coach?
I provide tangible results for the people I work with and ultimately for the organisation.

I care for people I work with. One of the most rewarding part is to see people and corporations grow when they experience new possibilities in their work or in their life

What do you feel passionate about?
I feel passionate about the process of growth of organisations with their unique culture and identity, and for the growth of people within these organisations.
Each individual has his own mystery and that fascinates me.
Working with people allows me to explore new “mindscapes” and to formulate with my clients a specific equation which leads them to their success.

As a new member of HKICC Management Commmittee, in what direction(s) would you like to see the organisation move?
I would like the organisation to be a strong stepping stone for coaches, facilitators and trainers. I think HKICC should serve as a reference not only for coaches but also for the general public and for professional organisations.
