As a finance professional, what led you to coaching?
I’ve ignited my interest in coaching since I realized two facts. First, many people (including me) have suffered from their blind spots in the processes of financial planning and investing. Coaching can help them improve financial performance by defogging. Second, financial abundance is not completing one’s life wheel. Coaching can help people integrate the pursuit of financial goals with other vital aspects of life.
Tell us something unique about your coaching style.
I adopt the “back-to-the-basics” style of coaching, i.e. focusing on questioning and listening. I like to imagine coaching as a process where a coach assists a client in browsing his/her “intranet” (human brain), spotting the “hyperlink” (the client’s real problem) and exploring the feasible solutions. Even as a finance professional, I won’t give any financial advice during the coaching conversation but let the clients dig out the financial wisdom by themselves.
What is your greatest accomplishment?
It is a coaching case where my client has eventually identified the right career direction after years of confusion. This case was covered by TVB’s program “Tuesday Report” last year, where both my client and I were interviewed. Now my client (originally a professional accountant) has transformed himself into a successful financial planner within less than one year. He said his decision to make this big career change was largely driven by coaching.
What is your favorite coaching tool?
I seldom use psychometrics and other coaching tools. I believe the most powerful coaching tool is the “clear mirror” in the coach’s mind.
How do you have fun?
Life is full of fun and everybody’s mind is a treasure box to open. Every client can teach me a lot if I am willing to listen to them without adding my own judgment.
