Strategic Momentum - A Coach's Process

By Katie Mattson

Every coach has a process. A flow. A system. This is my momentum.

As my business has evolved over the years, I've been asked more times than I can count what coaching is and how it is done. I've developed a strategy that I use with my clients - both personal clients and businesses. Everyone is different, so the beauty of coaching lies within an ability to relax into the process. My clients settle in with trust that our coaching conversations will take them where they want to go. As your coach, I ebb and flow through these key points, tailoring them to your needs. Each client finds their own unique journey forming, slowly seeing their mission materialize. Not only that, they astound themselves with the confidence in which they can fulfill that mission. This month I'm revealing my strategy in hopes that you will understand coaching a little better and even begin to work through it, giving thoughtful time to each step.

Step 1: Define a vision
How can you know what steps to take if you do not have a vision for where you would like to go? Don't wander the path aimlessly. Create a vivid vision for your destination. Fill in as many details as you can. If you aren't quite sure what that vision looks like, email me and I'll send you a vision worksheet that will help you gain clarity. If you have more than one potential destination, write out more than one vision, but don't skimp on any of the details! Enjoy the process, allow yourself to daydream.

Step 2: Take responsibility
Sometimes this step makes people want to shudder. Ugh, you mean I have to take responsibility for where I am? For my lack of progress? For my seeming failure? For the fact that I am the only one keeping myself stuck? Yes, yes, yes and yes! I know it's not easy, but at the end of the day owning up to your own roadblocks will free you to move on. Not only that, but you will feel more obligated to do so because you're only answering to yourself now. No more blaming. On the flip side, it's equally important to pat yourself on the back for accomplishments and moments where you spoke your truth. Authenticity is not overrated. Be true to what you need and who you are. Take responsibility for your own progress.

Step 3: Amplify Your Personal "Brand"
This step is the most fun in my opinion. Exploring your own personality, strengths, weaknesses, style and interests, we begin to further define who you are and what you want. By uncovering the authentic YOU, this process allows you to give yourself permission to see the incredible light that you have to shine on the world. From your words to your wardrobe to your environment, define what feels right for you. As you move more and more into authenticity, start practicing all aspects of this to reveal the true you to the world.

Step 4: Communicate Effectively
A big part of knowing the real you is being able to communicate it. This step occurs side by side with taking responsibility. Communication is only effective if you can clearly articulate why you are asking for something. Become better in tune with what you want and need. Slowly begin to remove judgment, expectation and demands from your language and learn to speak from the heart. Communicate the honest reasons behind what you are saying and what you are asking for - without attachment to the outcome.

Step 5: Plan for Success
Notice that there are four steps before this! I don't like it either, but they must be done in order to plan for your success. To revisit #1, don't wander the path aimlessly. Be prepared for success inside first. Then, you can begin to map out what the external steps look like. It is here that we use your vision to define how to get there including setting action steps, who you need to talk to and how to maintain a positive mindset. By being held accountable, your success evolves with more rapid progression that it might normally.

Coaching is a catalyst for success. Between having one hour committed to your progress each week and the personalized conversations that help you define where you want to go, you cannot help but move forward. Take some time with each of these steps, studying yourself in detail as you reflect on what each means to you.
