On January 9th 2010, the first seminar of the China Rural Teachers Project, launched by Dr Philip Hui, founder of Living Knowledge Social Enterprise, and promoted by Patrick Ng, HKICC’s VP of Marketing, took place at Private Hualian College in Guangzhou.

Introduced to participants as the Tao Xingzhi Thought Rural Education Coaching Technology, the seminar’s purpose was to explore how to support the development of rural teachers in order to improve the quality of education and life for rural children in mainland China.

Four HKICC members and several volunteers from Hong Kong and Shenzhen attended the meeting. The participants, numbering almost 50, comprised local teachers, principals and students from Guangzhou. HKICC representative, Summer Chan introduced them to HKICC and briefly shared the concept of coaching. I led a two-hour group discussion during which the teachers’ needs were discussed, and they were made aware of what coaching support can look like.

Discussion was warm and lively, and participants went home with a real sense of benefit. I was touched when one of the professors expressed his heart-felt thanks by way of singing a song.
