 Dear
Reader,
This month’s theme is “The Science of Coaching”. Well, is coaching an art or a science?
Many tend to believe that the arts and the sciences are two opposing forces, at opposite ends of a spectrum, and never the twain shall meet. But is this really true?
Art is felt, via the emotions, whereas science is evidence-based knowledge that has testable laws and theories. When I first decided to start my journey as a coach, I believed that coaching was an art. I assumed that every session with each client would involve me sensing my way through the process, and that the questions I asked would vary, depending on the client, and my perception of what they needed. However, I soon learned that even in life coaching, there are scientifically proven theories, based on patterns that are seen in human behavior and the way people respond to situations. And tools have been developed to help us identify the patterns, and these tools help us to bring our clients towards a favorable outcome.
In my opinion, a successful coach implements a good balance of artistry and scientific methodology in their coaching style. The artistic style of a coach is very personal, and is what makes each coach unique. It is what makes people choose one coach over another. And our artistic style is not always something that we can teach as it is a part of our own emotional make-up.

MEET OUR COACH MEMBER |

Coaching is still quite a new topic for a lot of clients in HK, they are not sure of what it can do for them, and the term ‘coach’ has also been misused and overused by professionals from different areas and with no coaching formal training, creating confusion in people’s mind. I believe a lot of ground work and marketing needs to be done to not only educate the market place on what we do, but also to reinforce the value of our work and the results we bring to our clients.

 Dear
Reader,
At one point or another, most of us have been confronted with our own recognition and need to outgrown particular behaviors that may be holding us back.
Without knowing how our brain functions, we may have been needlessly frustrated or self-critical each time we fall back to old habits.
This issue of the newsletter brings you some very insightful neuroscientific information about the functioning of the brain to explain why it’s hard to change one’s behavior, and how coaching impacts the brain.

A Brain-Based Approach to Coaching |
| |
|
Coaching has emerged from a synthesis of many fields including training, adult learning, consulting, change management, the human potential movement, psychology and systems science. Each of these fields has their own models and approaches to coaching. The various schools of thought agree on little, except that “coaching works,” and that more of it should be done. There is no widely accepted theoretical framework that explains why we need it, how it actually works and how to do it better.

Coaching Essentials – Brain-Based Coaching Seminar
By
Marina Milner
It seems that as humans we feel easily
threatened – for example, simply by believing
that we have been put at a disadvantage
socially. When this happens, our amygdala
(the stem at the bottom of the brain which is
about five hundred millions years old and
controls the fight-or-flight response)
absorbs the energy and oxygen that would
otherwise go to the pre-frontal cortex (at the
front of the head), which controls our conscious
cognitive activity.
