JULY 2010

PRESIDENT'S Message

Dear Reader,

It’s becoming more and more common for people to feel that they need to learn more to be better at something, read more in order to improve on themselves or their lives, etc.

And when things are not going the way we want, or life is not giving us what we want, the first thing we do is look for what more we need to learn or read up on or find out, in order for life to work for us. I often hear people say things like “But I am perpetually learning, and open to learning new things all the time. Why is it that I’m still not getting it right?” Or, “Why is it that no matter how many new skills I learn, I’m still not succeeding?”

Our default seems to be to always pursue more information. What if that is actually the cause of the problem?  What if we don’t actually need to learn anything more or new, but we actually need to unlearn some of what we already know?

MEET OUR COACH MEMBER

Bernard Cheung

There was a time in a coaching session where I asked the client, “What do you like to do when you have the money you want to accumulate and the free time you desire?”

There was a dead silence for a complete minute. The client realized that he lacked internal desires that would have guided him and this has contributed to him feeling perplexed for many years. As a coach, I do not know which question may invoke a deep insight, but I know that traditional development techniques could not achieve the above.

AUTHENCITY

EDITOR'S Message

Dear Reader,

Authenticity means different things to different people. But it usually, or maybe even always, has some-thing to do with "meaning" and "being real." It's something that one probably never really arrives at, but is more of a way of being, a moment-to-moment presence / state of mind, .

I hope the feature articles in this issue offer you interesting angles and inspiration on authenticity, be it for your private life, leadership role, or in your business.

The Invitation

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream for the adventure of being alive.

Are You Authentic In Your Small Business?

Being authentic can be surprisingly difficult, especially in business. I often work with people who have no problem being genuine in real life, but who really struggle with authenticity in business. I hear from clients that, in business, they have to appear to be mega-successful — not just sort of successful, and not “hey, I’m growing a business here,” but really successful, in order to be taken seriously. There’s so much posturing and pretending, because people believe that you can’t become successful unless you appear to already be successful.

The Most Elegant Path to Effective Leadership

I've been on a learning spurt in the past few months around the most effective ways to influence people, to lead, and to have my life proceed according to my highest desires. And what I'm learning is a way of operating that is much more effective than the conventional wisdom.

Fitting perfectly into that learning, I happened upon a very inspiring book called “Synchronicity, the Inner Path of Leadership”, by Joseph Jaworski.
